Austrian, Joseph
merchant, was born Sept. 15, 1833, in Bavaria. About 1882 the interests were consolidated under the name of the Lake Michigan and Lake Superior Transportation company, Mr. Austrian being elected the general manager, which office he yet holds. The company now operates six excellent steamers. The magnificent Manitou, the finest steel passenger steamer on the lakes, was added to the fleet in 1893. Mr.
Austrian has an interest in the Mastodon Iron company, near Crystal Falls, Mich., of which he has always been secretary and treasurer.
