Alexander, Sydenham B

soldier, farmer, state senator, congressman, was born Dec. 8, 1840, in Mecklenburg county, N. C. He entered the university of North Carolina in 1856 and graduated from that institution in 1860. In 1861 enlisted in the army as a private soldier in the first North Carolina volunteer infantry; June, 1862, was elected captain of company K, forty-second North Carolina infantry; and in 1864 was detached from his company and served as inspectorgeneral on the staff of Major-General R. F. Hoke; after the war returned home and engaged in farming; in 1877 was master of State Grange and a member of state board of agriculture; he was elected to the state senate in 1878, and was reelected in 1882, 1884, and 1886. He is a member of the board of trustees of the North Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical college; and was elected to the fiftysecond and re-elected to the fifty-third congress.
