Austin, Horace
soldier, lawyer, jurist, governor of Minnesota, was born in 1831 in Connecticut. He received an academic education; taught school; removed to Maine, and there studied law. In 1856 he removed to Minnesota, where he practiced his profession. He served as a captain against the Indians in 1863; in 1864 was elected a district judge; in 1869 was elected governor of Minnesota, and re-elected for a second term. On account of his health he retired to private life until 1876, when he was appointed third auditor of the United States treasury in Washington.
