Ashley, James M
lawyer, merchant, congressman, governor, was born Nov. 14, 1824, in Pittsburg, Pa. In 1849 he was admitted to the bar of Ohio; but abandoned that profession for the business of boat building. He was also connected with the press for awhile; and subsequently went into the wholesale drug business in Toledo, Ohio. He was elected a representative from Ohio to the thirty-sixth, thirty-seventh, thirty-eighth, thirty-ninth and fortieth congresses. In 1866 he was a delegate to the Philadelphia loyalists' convention. He was subsequently appointed governor of the territory of Montana.
