Arnold, Jonathan
surgeon, jurist, congressman, was born Dec. 14, 1741, in Providence, R. I. He was a member of the state assembly in 1776; and was the author of the act of May, 1776, repealing the laws providing for the oath of allegiance to the mother country. He was a surgeon in the revolutionary army; after the war removed to St. Johnsbury, Vt., where he was appointed judge of the Orange county court in 1782, holding that office during the remainder of his life.
He was a member of the continental congress from 1782 to 1784. He died Feb. 2, 1798, in St. Johnsbury, Vt.
