Andrew, John Albion

lawyer, governor, was born on May 31, 1818, in Windham, Maine. In 1837 he graduated from Bowdoin college; and in 1859 was elected a member of the Massachusetts state legislature. In 1860 he was elected governor of the state of Massachusetts, and acquired the title of The Great War Governor. He was a member of the Historical societies of Maine and Massachusetts; declined various honorable and lucrative offices, and resumed the practice of law. He died Oct. 30, 1867. A statue of marble in memoriam has been placed in the state house of Massachusetts in his honor.
