Andrew, James Osgood

bishop, was born May 3, 1794, near Washington, Ga. He entered the South Carolina conference in 1812, was ordained deacon in 1814, received full ordination in 1816, preached on circuits in Georgia and North Carolina, was stationed at Savannah, Charleston, Greensborough, and Athens, was presiding elder for several years, and in 1832 chosen bishop was by the general conference that met at Philadelphia. In 1846 the methodist episcopal church, south, was organized as an independent body, in a general conference held at Petersburg, Va. Bishop Andrew presided as senior bishop over this organization until his death. He published a volume of Miscellanies and a work on Family Government. He died March 1, 1871, in Mobile, Ala.
