Ammen, Daniel
naval officer, author, was born May 15, 1820, in Brown county, Ohio. He was chief of the naval bureau of navigation in 1870-78; and was sent to the so-called Paris canal congress in 1879. At the close of the civil war he designed the Ammen Life Raft, which saved the lives of more than half the crew of the Kearsarge when she was wrecked on a reef. He is the author of The Atlantic During the Civil War; The Old Navy and the New; Recollections of Grant; and various other papers.
