Aker, Leonard
farmer, soldier, legislator, was born in 1842 in Ravenna, Ohio. He enlisted as a private in company F, twelfth regiment Indiana volunteer infantry. After serving thirteen months, was mustered out at expiration of service, May 27, 1862. He re-enlisted Aug. 15, 1862, to serve three years, in company F, one hundredth Indiana volunteers. Commissioned second lieutenant; promoted to first lieutenant; and then captain, July 28, 1864, which rank he held when mustered out at the close of the war. Captain Aker was appointed on the commission to locate the Kansas soldiers' graves, and to erect a monument to the memory of the fallen heroes of the eighth Kansas, on the fields of Chickamauga and Mission Ridge, at the Chattanooga cemetery, in 1895. He served with distinction as a member of the Kansas state legislature in 1897.
