Great Captains of the War

Not until the fulness of time, when the fierce passions of war and their aftermath of controversy have subsided, can the characters of the chief actors be fairly gauged, either by their comrades or interested on-lookers. Censure and praise equally superficial are heaped upon the leaders in the field by self-constituted critics, who too readily forget that the play can rarely be understood until the end of the game. From the view-point of our own day we see certain heroic figures looming out from the battle-smoke with unmistakable grandeur. By a few master-characteristics their right of leadership is made clear.
