Wright, Carroll Davidson

soldier, lawyer, statistician, was born July 25, 1840, in Dunbarton, N. H. During the civil war he enlisted as a private in the fourteenth regiment New Hampshire volunteer infantry; and rose to the rank of colonel. In 1872-73 he served with distinction in the Massachusetts state senate; was presidential elector on the republican ticket in 1876; chief of the Massachusetts Bureau of Statistics of Labor during 1873-88; and since 1885 has been United States commissioner of labor. He has received the honorary degrees of M. A. from Tufts college, and LL. D.. from the Wesleyan university. He has been president of the American Statistical association; and is a member and fellow of many American and foreign scientific bodies. He is the author of Census of Massachusetts, 1875; The Factory System of the United States; The Relation of Political Economy to the Labor Question; Annual Reports of Massachusetts Bureau of Statistics, 1873- 88; Convict Labor; Strikes and Lockouts; Working Women in Large Cities; Railroad Labor; Marriage and Divorce; Cost of Production of Iron, Steel, etc.; Cost of Production of Textiles and Glass; and Industrial Evolution of the United States.

CHARLES WRIGHT, BARSTOW, financier, journalist, was born Jan. 8, 1822, in Bradford county, Pa. In 1863 he engaged actively in developing the petroleum interests of In Pennsylvania. 1870, as director and afterward as president, he undertook the work of pushing the Northern Pacific railroad to completion. He moved to Boston in 1839, and became editor of the Massachusetts Abolitionist. For several years he was connected with the press, and in 1846 he established the Chronotype, a daily newspaper, which he conducted until it was merged in the Commonwealth.
