Woods, Leonard
clergyman, educator, college president, author, was born Nov. 24, 1807, in West Newbury, Mass.
In 1831 he was an instructor in the Theological institution, and the same year translated and published an edition of Knapp's Theology. He was editor of the Literary and Theological Review during 1834-37; became professor of biblical literature in the Theological seminary of Bangor in 1836, and in 1839 became president of Bowdoin college. In 1866 he resigned the presidency of that institution, and the following year received a commission from the governor of Maine to collect material in Europe for the early history of the state for the Maine Historical society. He died Dec. 24, 1878.
