Wilson, William Lyne

soldier, educator, lawyer, congressman, cabinet officer, was born May 3, 1843, in Jefferson county, Va. He was elected president of the West Virginia university in 1882. He served in the forty-eighth, forty-ninth, fiftieth, fiftyfirst, fifty-second, and fifty-third congresses. In the fifty-third congress he was chairman of the committee on ways and means, and had charge of the tariff bill in the house; and in the same congress he introduced and carried through the house of representatives the bill for the repeal of the Sherman law. He was nominated by the president as postmastergeneral and confirmed by the senate, and took the oath of office on the 4th day of April, 1895.
