Whitney, William Dwight

philologist, was born Feb. 9, 1827, in North Hampton, Mass. He was a philologist of eminence, professor of Sanskrit at Yale university from 1854, and of comparative philology, also, from 1870. He edited The Century Dictionary; Language and the Study of Language; Compendious German Grammar; Oriental and Linguistic Studies; Life and Growth of Language; Essentials of English Grammar; Sanskrit Grammar; Practical French Grammar; Roots, Verb Forms, and Primary Derivatives of the Sanskrit Language; and Max Müller's Science of Language. He died in 1894.
