Wells, Charles William

publisher, author, was born May 7, 1757, in Charleston, S. C. Going with the king's troops to St. Augustine, Fla., in 1782, he published the first weekly newspaper in that province. He received the gold and silver Rumford medals from the Royal society in 1816 for the celebrated Essay on Dew, which is his greatest work.

WELLS, CHARLOTTE FOWLER, phrenologist, was born Aug. 14, 1814, in Cohocton, N. Y. She early became interested in the study of phrenology and is considered the pioneer woman in this field, having been for more than fifty years actively engaged in the work. On the death of her husband in 1875 she became owner and director of the establishment, together with the widely known Phrenological Journal, and is the president of the Fowler and Wells company.
