Washington, William

soldier, legislator, was born Feb. 28, 1752, in Stafford county, Va. He entered the army under Mercer, and greatly distinguished himself at the south as a commander of a corps of cavalry.

Taken prisoner at the battle of Eutaw Springs, he remained a captive until the close of the war. After the conclusion of peace he took other concern in public affairs than to no appear occasionally in the legislature of South Carolina, although he was offered the nomination for the governorship of that state. He died March 6, 1810, in Charleston, S. C.
