Wakefield, James B
lawyer, state senator, congressman, was born in 1828 in Connecticut. He was a member of the first state legislature of Minnesota in 1857; and was again a member of the legislature in 1865, and was elected speaker. He was a state senator in 1867-69; and in the latter year was appointed receiver of the United States land office at Winnebago City. He resigned in 1875, and was elected lieutenant-governor of Minnesota.
He was elected a representative from Minnesota to the forty-eighth congress; and was re-elected to the forty-ninth congress as a republican. WAKEFIELD, MRS. NANCY AMELIA WOODBURY PRIEST, was born Dec. 7, 1836, in Royalton, Mass. She was a versewriter remembered for her poem, Over the River. She died Sept. 21, 1870, in Winchendon, Mass.
WAKELEY, JOSEPH BEAUMONT, clergyman, author, was born in 1804 in Danbury, Conn. He was a methodist clergyman of New York city among whose writings are The Heroes of Methodism; Lost Chapters Recovered from Early American Methodism; Reminiscences; and The American Temperance Cyclopedia. He died April 27, 1876, in New York city.
WAKELIN, MARY A. HITCHCOCK, educator, temperance worker, was born April 28, 1834, in Rodman, N. Y. She has attained success in educational work, and for six years was state president of the Woman's Christian Temperance union of Nebraska.
