Upshur, Abel Parker

lawyer, jurist, congressman, author, was born June 17, 1790, in Northampton county, Va. In 1826 he was chosen judge of the general court of Virginia; and was again chosen judge, serving many years. In 1841 he went into the cabinet of President Tyler as secretary of the navy. In 1843 he was transferred to the head of the state department. He was the author of Inquiry into the Nature and Character of Our Federal Government. He died Feb. 28, 1844, near Washington, D. C.
