Underwood, Joseph Rogers

soldier, lawyer, jurist, congressman, United States senator, was born Oct. 24, 1791, in Goochland county, Va. In 1813 he was lieutenant of a volunteer company. He was a member of the Kentucky legislature from 1816 to 1819. In 1823 he removed to Bowling Green; and was elected a member of the general assembly in 1825 and 1826. From 1828 to 1835 he was judge of the court of appeals. He was elected a representative in congress, in which position he served from 1835 to 1843. In 1846 he was again elected to the legislature of Kentucky, and was speaker of the house. In 1847 he was elected a member of the United States senate for six years. He died Aug. 23, 1876, near Bowling Green, Ky.
