Stuyvesant, Peter
governor; was born in 1602, in Holland. He received an academic education; entered the Dutch military service, and was made governor of a colony on the island of Curacoa. In 1847 he became governor of the colony of New Netherlands, now New York. When the English fleet reached his territory in 1664, he was obliged to surrender, and was the last Dutch governor of the Island of Manhattan. His title was captain, general and governorin-chief of Amsterdam in New Netherland and the Dutch West India Islands. He died in 1672 in New York city.
