Stuart, Isaac William

educator, state legislator, author, was born in 1809 in New Haven, Conn. He was thrice elected to the Connecticut state senate.

While professor at South Carolina college he produced an annotated edition of the Edipus Tyrannus of Sophocles. In later life he gave much attention to American history and antiquities. He died Oct. 2, 1861, in Hartford, Conn.

STUART, JAMES EWELL BROWN, soldier, was born Feb. 6, 1833, in Patrick county, Va. He commanded all the confederate cavalry at Bull Run; was made brigadier-general in 1861; and major-general in 1862. He was killed in battle May 11, 1864, near Richmond, Va.
