Stoneman, George
soldier, was born Aug. 8, 1822, in Busti, N. Y. In 1846 he graduated from the United States Military academy, and was brevetted jor-general, and retired from the army in 1871. He has since lived in California, of which state he was governor during 1883-87. During his administration the California state tax rate was lower than it had ever been in the history of that state. He is a brilliant orator; and has filled all the local offices in the gift of his state.
