Spaight, Richard D
soldier, congressman, governor, was born March 25, 1758, in New Berne, N. C. In 1781 he entered the house of commons of North Carolina; from 1782 to 1874 was a member of the continental congress, and also during the years 1785 and 1786. He was one of the delegates to form the constitution of the United States, to which his name is appended. He was a presidential elector in 1797; and in 1792 was again elected to the local legislature. He was the same year elected governor of North Carolina; and was a representative in congress from 1798 to 1801, after which he was elected to the state senate. He died Sept. 6, 1802, in New Berne, N. C.
