Smith, Samuel
soldier, merchant, congressman, United States senator, was born July 27, 1752, in Lancaster, Pa. He was a distinguished merchant of Baltimore, of which city he was mayor. He rose from the rank of captain to that of brigadier-general in the revolutionary war. In 1776 he was a member of the convention for framing the constitution of Maryland; and was a representative in congress from that state from 1793 to 1803, and again from 1816 to 1822. He was a senator in congress from 1803 to 1815, and again from 1822 to 1833. He died April 22, 1839, in Baltimore, Md.
