Smith, Samuel Harrison

journalist, author, was born in 1772 in Philadelphia, Pa. He edited the New World in 1796-1800, and on the removal of the seat of government to Washington, D. C., on Oct. 31 of the latter year, founded the National Intelligencer, which he edited till 1818. He was commissioner of revenue from 1813 till the office was abolished. He published Remarks on Education; and Trial of Samuel Chase, Impeached Before the United States Senate, in two volumes. He died Nov. 1, 1845, in Washington, D. C.
