Smith, Benjamin
state legislator, governor, was born in 1750 in Brunswick county, N. C. He was a member of the North Carolina state legislature in 1792; was a general of militia; and was governor of the state from 1810 to 1811. His life was one of many difficulties; was engaged in many duels; but is kindly remembered because of his donation of twenty thousand acres of land to the State university in 1789. He died Feb. 10, 1829, in Smithville, N. C.
