Sloane, John
state legislator, congressman, was born in 1779 in York, Pa. He was elected a member of the Ohio general assembly in 1804 and 1805, and 1805 was speaker. He was a receiver of public moneys at Canton, Ohio, from 1808 to 1816; and was afterward at Wooster until 1819. He was a colonel of militia during the war of 1812. In 1819 he was elected to congress as a representative from Ohio, continuing a member until 1829. He was secretary of state for three years; and was treasurer of the United States under President Fillmore. He died May 15, 1856, in Wooster, Ohio.
