Slidell, John
lawyer, state legislator, congressman, United States senator, was born about 1793 in New York city. He was appointed United States district attorney; and was frequently elected to the legislature of Louisiana. He was a representative in congress from 1843 to 1845; and while in congress was appointed minister to Mexico. In 1853 he was elected to the United States senate for the unexpired term of Senator Soule; and was re-elected for six years. He died July 29, 1871, in London, England.
