Sheffield, William Paine

lawyer, state legislator, congressman, was born Aug. 30, 1819, on Block Island, R. I.

In 1845 he was elected, from his native town, a member of the state assembly.

Removing his residence to Tiverton, he was again elected to the assembly in 1849, where he continued to serve until 1853, when he resigned his seat, and settled in Newport, and represented that city in the assembly from 1857 to 1861. He was elected a representative from Rhode Island to the thirty-seventh congress, and in 1869 was appointed one of the commissioners to revise the laws of Rhode Island.
