Sewell, William Joyce

soldier, United States senator, was born Dec. 6, 1835, in Ireland. He served in the merchant marine for a few years; then went to Chicago, Ill., and engaged in business.

He entered the union army in 1861 as a captain, and was mustered out of service at the close of the war as a brevet major - general. He served in the state senate of New Jersey nine years, three years as president of the senate. He was a delegate to all the republican national conventions from 1876 to 1896; and was elected a senator of the United States from New Jersey for the term of six years from March 4, 1881; and was reelected in 1895 for term expiring in 1901.
