Scott, Winfield
soldier, lawyer, author, was born June 13, 1786, in Petersburg, Va. He joined the army in 1808; was made lieutenantcolonel in 1812, and passed through the war that ensued with great honor to himself and his company. He was brevetted major-general in 1814, and was made general - in chief of the army in 1841. He was made lieutenant-general in - 1855. He was voted a gold medal for his service in the war of 1812. He was a candidate for the presidency in 1852. He was the author of General Regulations of the Army; System of Infantry and Rifle Tactics; and Autobiography (1864). He died May 29, 1866, in West Point, N. Y.
