Scammon, Jonathan Young

law- 27, 1812, in Whitefield, Maine. He was yer, journalist, statesman, was born July one of the main organizers and directors of the first railroad west of Lake Michigan, now the Northwestern. He laid the foundation of the first successful public school system in Chicago. He was one of the founders of the Chicago Astronomical society, and its first president. In 1872 he established the Chicago Inter Ocean as a republican paper. He founded the Hahnemann hospital and other institutions. He was a member of the Illinois state legislature. He died March 17, 1890, in Chicago, Ill.
