Ryder, James
educator, clergyman, college president, was born Oct. 8, 1800, in Ireland. In 1839 he became pastor of St. Mary's church, Philadelphia, and in the following year he took charge of a church in Frederick, Md., which he soon left to assume the presidency of Georgetown college. From 1843 till 1845 he was superior of the Jesuit order in the United States. In 1846 he became president of the college of the Holy Cross, which had been established three years before at Worcester, Mass. He died Jan. 12, 1860, in Philadelphia, Pa.
