Russell, Lillian
operatic singer, was born Dec. 4, 1861, in Clinton, Iowa.
Her father was Charles E. Leonard, who died in 1897, and for many years prior to his death was a member of the firm of Knight and Leonard, the well-known printers and publishers of Chicago. Her mother, Cynthia Leonard, has been for many years a prominent advocate of female suffrage and other reforms. Lillian made her debut as a ballad singer in New York city; went to Europe in 1883, and from 1885 attained rank as one of the foremost operatic singers of the century.
Her labors on the stage have been highly profitable, and she is now the possessor of a comfortable home in New York city.
She has been married and has one daughter.
