Royce, Stephen

lawyer, jurist, state legislator, governor, was born Aug. 12, 1787, in Tinmouth, Vt. He was a member of the Vermont legislature in 1815 and 1816, from Sheldon county, and from 1822 to 1824 from St. Albans county. He was judge of the supreme court of the state in 1826 and 1827, and from 1829 to 1852.

He was chief justice from 1846 to 1851; and was governor of Vermont from 1854 to 1856. He died Nov. 11, 1868, in East Berkshire, Vt.
