Root, Erastus
lawyer, state senator, congressman, was born March 16, 1773, in Hebron, Conn. He was a representative in the New York assembly eleven years; was speaker of the house three years; and was state senator eight years. He was a representative in congress from 1803 to 1805, and from 1809 to 1817, when he resigned and was appointed postmaster at Delhi, N. Y. In 1822 he was chosen lieutenant-governor of the state; was again elected to congress from 1831 to 1833. He died in 1846 in New York city.
