Ringgold, Samuel
soldier, inventor, was born in 1800 in Washington county, Md. He became captain in 1836, participated in the Florida war, and was brevetted major for active and efficient conduct during hostilities. He introduced flying artillery into this country, and invented a saddle-tree, which was subsequently known as the McClelland saddle, and a rebounding hammer made of brass for exploding the fulminating primers for field-guns, that prevented the blowing away of the hammer. He died May 11, 1846, in Point Isabel, Tex.
