Richards, William
missionary, was born Aug. 22, 1792, in Plainfield, Mass. In 1822 he embarked as a missionary to the Sandwich islands. In 1838 he became councilor, chaplain and interpreter to the king, and after the recognition of the independence of the islands by foreign powers was sent as ambassador to England, and to other courts. He died Dec. 7, 1847, in Honolulu.
RICHARDS, WILLIAM ALFORD, farmer, civil engineer, governor, was born March 9, 1849, in Hazel Green, Wis. He has been county surveyor in California and Colorado, and during 1889-93 was United States surveyor-general of Wyoming. Jan. 7, 1895, he was inaugurated governor of Wyoming for a term of four years.
