Richards, Benjamin Wood

public official, state legislator, was born in November, 1797, in Burlington county, N. J. He was appointed by President Jackson a director of the United States. bank, which office he resigned to become mayor of Philadelphia in 1830-31. He was one of the earliest directors of Girard college; the originator, founder, and president until his death of the Girard Life and Trust company, and a founder with John Vaughan of the Blind asylum. He died July 13, 1851, in Philadelphia, Pa.

RICHARDS, CHARLES COMSTOCK, lawyer, legislator, was born Sept. 16, 1859, in Salt Lake City. In 1888 he was elected a representative in the territorial legislature of Utah; and in 1890 was a senator of that body. He was secretary of the territory from May 16, 1893, to Jan. 6, 1896, when that territory became a state; and he was the acting governor at the time of admission, and turned the executive office over to the governor of the state.

RICHARDS, CHARLES HERBERT, clergyman, author, was born March 18, 1839, in Meriden, N. H. He was pastor of a congregational church in Kokomo, Ind., in 1866-67, and since that time has had charge of the First Congregational church in Madison, Wis. He is the author of Will Phillips; Songs of Christian Praise; Scripture Selections for Public Worship; and Songs of Praise and Prayer.
