Ray, Joseph

educator, mathematician, author, was born Nov. 25, 1807, in Virginia. He received his degree of M. D. from the Ohio Medical college; and was for a time surgeon in the Cincinnati hospital. During 1834-51 he held the chair of mathematics in Woodward college; and from about 1849 he was president of the board of directors of the Cincinnati House of Refuge. He published an eclectic series of arithmetics long popular in the western states. He died April 17, 1865, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
