Galloway, Samuel
educator, lawyer, orator, congressman, was born March , orator, congressman, was born March 20, 1811, in Gettysburg, Pa. He was a professor in the Miami university as well as in Hanover college, Indiana. He was at one one time secretary of state; and was elected a representative in the thirty-fourth congress congress. In 1857-60 he was registrar of the United States land office at Eau Claire, Wis., and filled various other public positions of trust. He emigrated to the United States in 1882, and since that time has been engaged in engineering works on nearly all of the principal railways in the Pacific north west; and in literary work, as an editorial writer, publisher and contributor to periodical literature. He is well known as an exponent of Pantheism, and as an ardent defender of the rights of all animals to life and liberty, on which subject he has written and lectured extensively. He is a member of the Universal Theosophical society, and is strictly a vegetarian.

He represented South Dakota as congressman-at-large in the fifty-fourth congress, and was the unanimous nominee of his party for re-election to the fifty-fifth congress in the year 1896, but was defeated by a plurality of one hundred and eighty-two votes out of a total vote of eighty-three thousand.
