Nicollet, Jean Nicholas
explorer, was born July 24, 1786, in Cluses, Savoy. After exploring the southern states he studied the great basin that is embraced by the sources of the Red, Arkansas and Missouri rivers, and in 1836 extended his investigations to the sources of the Mississippi. On his return to Washington he was engaged by the war department to visit the far west and prepare a general report and map for the government. He died Sept. 11, 1843, in Washington, D. C.
