Newman, Samuel Phillips

educator, author, was born in 1797 in Andover, Mass. In 1818 he became a tutor in Bowdoin college, and the following year was chosen professor of ancient languages. In 1824 he was transferred to the chair of rhetoric and oratory. After twenty-one years in that institution he took charge of the normal school at Barre, Mass. He was the author of a treatise on rhetoric, which is still a textbook in a multitude of schools and numerous colleges. He was also the author of an elementary work on Political Economy. He died Feb. 10, 1842, in Andover, Mass.
