Laurence, John
soldier, lawyer, jurist, congressman, United States senator, was born in 1750 in England. In 1775 he was commissioned in the first New York regiment, and served to the end of the revolutionary war. In 1785 and 1786 he was a member of the first congress; in 1789 was elected a state senator, and during that year was elected by a five-sixths vote a representative in the federal congress, serving from 1789 to 1793. He was appointed in 1794 judge of the United States district court for New York; and was a senator in congress from 1796 to 1800. He died in 1810.
