Kirkwood, Samuel Jordan

lawyer, governor, United States senator, was born Dec. 20, 1813, in Hartford county, Md. He moved to Iowa in 1855; was elected to the senate of that state in 1856; and was governor of Iowa from 1860 to 1864.

In 1866 he was elected a senator in congress from Iowa to fill a vacancy. 1875 he was again elected governor of Iowa; and in 1876 was again elected to the United States senate for the term commencing in 1877 and ending in 1883. In
