Howell, Mary Seymour

reformer, lecturer, author, was born Aug. 29, 1850, in Mount Morris, N. Y. She received a classical education, and has devoted much time to the educational interests of New York.

At one time she was conductor of teachers' institutes, and for several years an examiner of the higher branches under the regents of the university. She has delivered many ance. historical and literary lectures, and has done much work for the cause of temper- She has repeatedly pleaded the cause of woman before the committees of state legislatures, and of congress; and is the only woman ever asked to speak before the house of representatives of Connecticut. She is the president of the National American Woman's Suffrage association; National Lecturer for the Woman's Christian Temperance union; and has filled various positions in the cause of temperance and reform.
