Horstmann, Ignatius F

priest, bishop, was born Dec. 16, 1840, in Philadelphia, Pa. Completing the prescribed course of studies, he was elevated to the priesthood in 1865.

He continued the studies in Rome, and a year later won the degree of doctor of divinity. In 1866 he was appointed professor of logic, metaphysics and ethics, as well as of German and Hebrew, in St.

Charles Borromeo's seminary of Philadelphia; and then during 1871-77 at Overbrook. In 1877 he appointed rector of St. Mary's church; in 1885 became chancellor; in 1892 was installed as bishop of Cleveland; and his diocese covers all of northern Ohio.

He is an eloquent speaker; a facile writer; genial and democratic in manners; generous to the poor; and a thorough American in sentiment. was
