Harvey, James Madison
civil engineer, governor, United States senator, was born Sept. 21, 1833, in Monroe county, Va. He was captain in the fourth and tenth regiments of Kansas volunteer infantry from 1861 until 1864. He was a member in the lower house of the state legislature in 1865 and 1866; and a member of the state senate in 1867 and 1868; was governor of Kansas from 1869 to 1871; and was elected to the United States senate to fill a vacancy, serving during 1874-77.
