Hand, Augustus C

lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Sept. 4, 1803, in Stoneham, Vt. He settled at Elizabethtown, N. Y.; and was surrogate of his county from 1831 to 1839. He was a representative in congress from New York from 1839 to 1841; and a member of the state senate from 1845 to 1848. He was a justice of the supreme court from 1848 to 1856, after which he was wholly devoted to the practice of his profession. He died March 8, 1878, in Elizabethtown, N. Y.
