Hale, Benjamin
educator, college president, author, was born Nov. 23, 1797, in Newburyport, Mass. In 1818 he graduated from Bowdoin college, and subsequently filled the chair of mathematics and natural philosophy in that institution. In 1827 he became professor of chemistry and pharmacy in Dartmouth college. In 1836 he elected president of Geneva college in western New was York, and for ten years filled that position with honor. He was the author of Introduction to the Mechanical Principles of Carpentry; Scriptural Illustrations of the Liturgy; Education in Its Relations Government; and Historical Notices of Geneva College. He died July 15, 1863, in Newburyport, Mass.
